Terms & Conditions
The terms that apply when you order a handpainted portrait — ordering, delivery, cancellations and returns.
Last updated: 27 October 2026
1. About these terms
These terms apply to every order placed with Handpainted Portraits, whether through this website, by email or over the phone. By placing an order you agree to them. If anything is unclear, please contact us before ordering at info@handpaintedportraits.co.uk.
2. Our portraits are handmade
Every portrait is an original watercolour painting made by hand from the photographs you send. No two paintings are identical, and slight differences in colour, tone, texture and detail are part of what makes a handpainted portrait unique. Screens show colour differently, so the finished painting may look slightly different from how it appeared on your device.
3. Placing an order
- You can order through the website, where the price, size and frame options are shown before you pay, or by contacting the artist directly.
- Your order is accepted when we confirm it by email and take payment. If we cannot accept an order — for example because a photograph is unsuitable — we will contact you and refund any payment in full.
- You must be at least 18 years old to place an order.
4. Photographs and your responsibility
You are responsible for making sure you have the right to use the photographs you send, and for any personal information they contain. Please do not send photographs of anyone who has not given you permission to have their portrait painted. If you are ordering on behalf of someone else, you confirm that you have their permission.
5. Sketch approval and changes
Before any painting begins we send you a sketch of your portrait. This is your opportunity to check the pose, composition, framing and background, and to request reasonable changes. Once you approve the sketch, the composition is final — major changes requested after painting has started may not be possible, or may incur an additional charge that we will always explain before proceeding.
6. Prices and payment
Prices are shown in pounds sterling (GBP) and include VAT where applicable. The total price, including any chosen frame and delivery, is confirmed before you pay. Payment is taken securely at the time of ordering. We never store your card details.
7. Timescales
A portrait is usually completed within one to two weeks of sketch approval, depending on size and how many subjects are included. If you need it for a particular date — a birthday, wedding or anniversary — please tell us when you order and we will confirm whether it is achievable before you pay.
8. Delivery
Finished portraits are professionally framed, carefully packaged and delivered free within the United Kingdom. We aim to dispatch within a few working days of completion. Please make sure the delivery address you give us is correct; if a parcel is returned because of an incorrect address, re-delivery may incur a charge. Please inspect your parcel on arrival and tell us straight away if the painting has been damaged in transit.
9. Your right to cancel
Under the Consumer Contracts Regulations you normally have 14 days to cancel an order from the day it is delivered. However, because each portrait is bespoke and made to your instructions, once painting has begun following your approval of the sketch the order becomes personalised and the statutory right to cancel may not apply. If you change your mind before approving the sketch, contact us and we will cancel and refund your order in full.
10. If something goes wrong
If you are unhappy with your portrait, contact us as soon as it arrives. We will refund you or agree a reasonable adjustment to the painting. Because you approve the sketch before painting begins, we aim to make sure the finished piece is exactly what you expected. Nothing in these terms affects your statutory rights.
11. Our work and copyright
The artist retains copyright in every portrait created. You may display, gift or resell the physical painting, but please do not reproduce it commercially without written permission. Unless you have given consent, we will not display your portrait on our website, social media or in our portfolio.
12. Gift vouchers
Gift vouchers are delivered by email and can be redeemed against any handpainted portrait. Vouchers are valid for 12 months from purchase and are not exchangeable for cash. The voucher holder is responsible for sending their photograph and approving the sketch.
13. Liability and governing law
We are responsible for loss you suffer that is a foreseeable result of our breaking these terms or failing to use reasonable care. We are not responsible for loss that results from using photographs you did not have the right to send, or from information you provide that is incorrect. These terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales.
